"Detail From Sister Ray," Andrew Zealley, 2015.
Andrew Zealley is a musician and multimedia artist who recently organized "This Is Not Art Therapy," an artist residency and internship program positioned within the People with Aids Foundation (P.W.A.) in downtown Toronto.
Joined by Suzanne Paddock, the PWA's Director of Programs & Services, we discussed the intersections between arts activism, healing and contemporary AIDS/HIV activism. (In the wake of David Bowie's passing, Andrew's inclusion of "Pressured" brings the interview to an especially poignant close.)
Here are links to some of the things we talked about:
Brené Brown’s TED Talk on Shame
The Toronto arts collective, General Idea
Professor Jin Haritworn's new book, “Queer Lovers and Hateful Others: Regenerating Violent Times and Places"
Susan Sontag on AIDS and Its Metaphors (1989)
The annual Day With(out) Art, a call for "mourning and action in response to the AIDS crisis," organized to coincide with World AIDS Day
Hannah Arendt and the "space of appearance"
Syrus Marcus Ware’s “Fall to Pieces” show at the Gladstone Hotel
Achille Mbembe on “Necropolitics” and “the Post-Colony”
Wendy Coburn's solo exhibition, “Anatomy of a Protest”
Pretty Beuys, Andrew's musical collaboration with Robert Bolton
